Why Learn Sanskrit?

If you practise yoga, chant mantras or enjoy Indian philosophy, you're probably already familiar with quite a few Sanskrit words. But how much do you really know about what they mean?

Learning Sanskrit opens up a whole new way of understanding these traditions. You'll begin to recognise how words are put together, discover meanings that don't always come across in translation, and approach familiar mantras and texts with fresh eyes.

And you don't have to spend years studying grammar to get something out of it. Even a little Sanskrit can make a real difference to how you understand what you're reading, chanting or teaching.

My approach is to take the language seriously without making learning it unnecessarily complicated. You'll get clear explanations, time to absorb what you're learning and plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Learning Sanskrit

  • Sanskrit is different from modern languages, and some aspects of it can take a bit of getting used to. But it's also a wonderfully logical language, with patterns that become easier to recognise as you learn. You don't have to tackle everything at once! My short courses let you concentrate on one aspect of Sanskrit at a time.

  • Not at all for courses aimed at beginners! Some workshops assume a little previous knowledge, but I'll always make that clear in the course description so you can choose what's right for you.

  • No! Many of my short courses use transliteration, which allows you to read Sanskrit using the Roman alphabet with a few additional marks to represent the sounds accurately. You can start learning Sanskrit without having to master a new writing system.

  • Absolutely! In fact, many of my students are yoga teachers. Whether you want to improve your pronunciation, understand the meanings of āsana names or explore the mantras and philosophy behind yoga, learning Sanskrit can make a real difference to your teaching.

  • Wonderful! If a short course whets your appetite, you can continue with my longer Sanskrit courses, explore traditional texts or arrange individual lessons. There's always more to discover, and you can go as far as your curiosity takes you.
